Notes on the "hot tunnel" issue

  • It may come from partially closed valves, using the SS valves which have an air dam solves that potential issue. Also check that the lever on the stock model does not hit the valve frame before actually closing all the way.
  • It is caused mainly by hot air blowing at the valve even when the valves are closed (bypass mode). Heat-shielding the firewall area around it addresses that. Also putting heat shield material between the valve and the firewall.
  • At some point, Vetterman, who makes the RV-10 stock exhaust, addressed the issue, and reduced the BTU output of the heating elements. Therefore less-hot air blows against the closed valves and the heating capacity is still plenty for the RV-10 when the valves are open. There are builders with everything stock and no "hot tunnel" issue. When exactly that change was made is TBD, some years before 2022 at least.
